Last fall, Rindge Memorial School Learning Specialist Patricia Boulle was honored by the Harris Center for Conservation as an honorable mention for its 50th anniversary photo contest. Her photo was an honorable mention in the “People in Nature” category.
Boulle’s photo depicts a group of fifth grade girls peering out of a tent on an overnight outing with Harris Center teacher-naturalist Janet Altobello in June 2019.
“It felt great to have my photo selected! I was so proud and pleased to be able to share this experience! I had no idea there was even a photo contest to be happening,” said Boulle. “I was taking photos for the girls to have for memories and to capture the experiences.”
Boulle said the girls in the photo were taking part in an activity through Rindge Memorial School’s Girls on the Go! Club. The club was started in 2007 and served as a way to expose girls to positive and fun activities that help to encourage healthy habits. The club also allows girls to have a space to hang out with other girls and to try new things.
“It is important to offer experiences to students that they may not have the opportunity to have otherwise,” said Boulle. “This may instill a particular love of something that carries into adulthood - keeping them active throughout the years/in all seasons.”
Boulle said that some of the girls in the group had never been camping in a tent before. Students were able to cook food on camp stoves and built a fire for making smores.
“The whole experience was so great! The girls really grew together and used their strengths and helped each other with their less comfortable areas they may have had,” Boulle said.
